Louise Gouëffic's Research

Lies and secrets in language

Author Louise Gouëffic, B.A., B.Ed., has done graduate studies in France, and for 30 years has collected, categorized, and analyzed 20,000 words across the Indo-European tradition, addressing our species and its two members: male and fe-male. The words she analyzed were gleaned from hundreds of dictionaries worldwide. Louise looked at the etymology, historical background, purpose, meaning, messages, aims, goals, generative use, cross-cultural borrowings, and modern usage of these words. She analyzed recurrent themes and recurrent linguistic techniques used in language. From this research came her first book. Breaking the Patriarchal Code: The Linguistic Basis of Sexual Bias,1996, Knowledge, Ideas and Trends, Manchester, Connecticut. In this book, Gouëffic lists 10,000 words and shows the linguistic formulas and techniques used to make dominance appear to be "the way it is."
Now Available! Louise Gouëffic's second book, "An Inconvenient Lie: Secrets in Language"

In her second book, An Inconvenient Lie, Louise Gouëffic looks at the premises and finds false assumptions in words that embed lies. These "lies" harm the species, causing us to believe that we are violent by nature. An understanding of why we believe that violence is "in our nature" can be found in aspects of language that developed over 4,000 years. Louise suggests alternatives and solutions.

In An Inconvenient Lie the author shows how names make us see ourselves and our species in these names, and what names do to our identity, and then she proposes changes in language that create truths rather than lies. Louise proposes words that lead to a more empathic, honest, and rational life; language that makes it easier for us to be more truthful and honest; language that makes life less confusing, more equal, and less riddled with conflict, war, and violence to solve problems, leading to more peace and dignity for all.
